Objectives and Expected Results In Japan, torrential rains occur every year, and many precious lives and properties are lost due to the rainfall induced landslide disasters. National and local government authorities have implemented maintenance and disaster prevention measures in many areas to prevent landslide induced disasters to some extent. However, traditional hard type measures cannot guarantee complete disaster prevention, and are also financially unsustainable for large scale deployment in a mountainous country like Japan. Soft type measures through monitoring the slopes and early warning based on IoT, ICT, and data science will become more relevant in the future. Many landslide monitoring systems are already in operation, however, they are not capable of providing an early warning with sufficient time for evacuation of residents from the potential hazard area. Therefore, this study aims to develop a low-cost sensor platform for early detection of the triggering phenomenon of slope failure caused by heavy rainfall. Such system will be able to provide a useful early warning and evacuation system (EWS) for the national and local government authorities. The objective of this research is to develop an EWS and propose effective evaluation indicators responsible for slope failure by analyzing the data obtained from the sensor system. The penultimate goal of this research is to create a resilient society through interdisciplinary collaboration. In previous research, a series of model tests were conducted and the data acquired from various sensors and communication systems were then analyzed. Through this, key indices to evaluate the risks of slope failures were identified. In this research, a sensor and battery less communication platform will be implemented at a site in Fukuoka Prefecture to evaluate its performance in field conditions. In addition, the test results from the field tests will be analyzed using a mathematical approach and a prediction model for landslide EWS will be built.
